Raw Honey & Essential Oil Flock Healer

I wanted to save this amazing and simple recipe for flock healer and figured I would put it here in case anyone else could use it. When I started searching for something to put on my duckling when she was pecked raw from a chicken (I am assuming), all I could find was ways to cook a duck. Ha! So maybe when someone else has the same question..you can actually find something useful to keep your bird healthy rather than making it tasty. See my duck injury post here.
This recipe is super simple and you may have most of the ingredients around the house already.

You will need:
1/4c Raw Honey : I used a local Grinnell, IA raw honey.
2 drops Lavender Essential Oil (this is my trusted source for essential oils)
2 drops Frankincense Essential Oil
2 drops Blue food coloring

Easy right? Just mix in a bowl and use a glove and apply generously on your poultry's wound.

Raw honey has been used for centuries for its amazing antibacterial properties. The best honey to buy is local. Local honey will likely still have pollen in it because it is not processed as much. Pollen is what carries a lot of the antibacterial properties. If you cannot source local raw honey, find the best organic honey you can get your hands on. Ultra processed honey's will not work as well.
Lavender and Frankincense essential oils are well known for their anti-inflammatory and healing properties and both are safe to use, diluted, on your flock. Frankincense works to repair the broken skin cells quicker, and better while lavender offers pain relief. Blue food coloring is important because naturally, birds are attracted to the sight of blood. Adding a couple drops of blue food coloring to any salve or honey mix will mask the blood spots and deter the rest of your flock (and any aerial predator) from pecking at your already injured bird.
I applied the honey two times and the wounds were significantly improved and the skin was not angry looking. The birds were very calm and did not seem in pain. Honey is wonderful because it is super sticky, as we all know, and will adhere itself to a wet, bloody wound better than a salve would. It is also natural! You are not going to have the issue of putting a medication into your bird;s system and waiting for it to process out before you can eat the eggs or meat. Our ducklings are not laying yet, but it is good practice if you want to raise an organic flock.
